Claim Your Work-From-Home Costs
If you are employed, but the pandemic meant you worked from home in 2020, you can claim some home office expenses in the same way that self employed people often do. To qualify, you must have spent more than half your working time at home for at least four consecutive weeks.
There are two options. Your Financial Advisor can help you determine which one will give you the highest tax credit.
One involves calculating your household costs and applying a percentage to cover to your home office space. Among the allowable costs are electricity; internet (but not connection fees); and rent, if applicable. You and your employer must complete a form to confirm your eligibility (Form T2200S or Form T777S).
The second is a temporary flat rate of $2 per day up to $400 maximum. The best option depends on factors such as whether you pay rent or carry a mortgage.
